Water system is a must for ancient capitals. Moats around capital cities not only protect the security of the city, but also the key to transportation, disaster prevention, and water supply. Based on this historical background of Xi’an, we introduced a water system symbolizing flying dragons running through the development to ease the lack of water in north China caused by historic and climate reasons, and a water garden in the main lot to reproduce the grand scene of “City Surrounded by Water” in Xi’an in ancient times. For the portal of the project, the show area, we applied traditional craftsmanship of rockery and waters to the design with study of traditional gardening methods in ancient gardening book “Zuotingji” and “Yuanye” and reference to Zen gardens in Japan, which has the same latitude as Xi’an and frequent communication with ancient Chang’an, to provide residents an escape from the busy city and a place to embrace the nature.
