Shenzhen Bay Shekou Promenade

Shekou Coastal Promenade is Shenzhen Bay’s recently completed 6 kilometer-long vibrant, public waterfront. The project transforms Shenzhen’s once industrial shoreline into a socially resilient and celebrated open space system. While programmed to be accessible from the adjoining neighborhoods, the promenade blends old and new cultures and creates a distinct identity for the repurposed industrial waterfront. The number of visitors to Shekou Promenade has averaged 20,000 people per day since its opening in August 2017; and exceeding 30,000 during events (according to the Shenzhen Urban Management Bureau). The popularity of this open space is attributed to a number of qualities – besides being an accessible, well-constructed new park that allows people to engage various activities, the promenade is a contemporary landscape space that has the ability to evoke the memory of the place through interpreting the cultural heritage of this postindustrial waterfront. People love to spend time here as it kept a unique experience of “Authentic Shekou” after repurposing. Beauty China program on CCTV has also featured this popular waterfront for its successful defining urban culture and promoting healthy life style.
