NOI Techpark

Bespoke design for tech start-ups and R&D

The 25,000 sqm NOI (Nature of Innovation) Techpark in Bolzano, one of Italy’s most desirable areas to live and work, is designed to house a wide range of innovation companies, university research institutions and training centres as an engine for economic development throughout the South Tyrol region.

The client brief was to create a technology park at a disused former aluminum factory site for use by the local university and technology R&D companies. It was necessary to ensure that this striking complex retained its period character while also being brought fully up to date as a home fit for a 21st century technology hub. The development had to achieve sustainability accreditation, with a carbon neutral footprint.

Sensitive industrial heritage refurbishment

NOI Techpark is located in the former Alumix factory, once the largest aluminum factory in Italy. The team sympathetically refurbished the two existing listed buildings and constructed the Black Monolith building as a contextually appropriate link between the existing structures. The beautiful water tower adjacent to the buildings was also restored, giving the whole complex a memorable signature piece and focal point.
