Jiangbinxincun NO.2 Neighborhood Sponge City Retrofit Project

The city of Zhenjiang, a historic Chinese city on the Yangtze River northwest of Shanghai is undergoing a climate resilient transformation. Many neighborhoods in Zhenjiang were built before the 1970s. Due to the lack of regional planning and maintenance, these areas have endured annual flooding, deterioration of aging infrastructure, lack of appropriate sanitary conditions and no parking lot for decades. This Jianger Neighborhood Sponge City Retrofit Project provides a unique landscape-civil engineering integrated approach transforming this low income 1.9 ha neighborhood to a healthy climate resilient place to live in.
Instead of employing traditional engineering solutions, this project envisions a new way to solve these problems by using landscape designs + N elements, which include green stormwater infrastructure (GSI), energy conservation, utilities upgrades, installation of parking lot and preservation of urban farming.
Hydrologic models were used to design GSI which guided the landscape design to make these neighborhoods not only resilient to extreme weather conditions but also shinning in aesthetics. The project serves as a model for about 40 identified neighborhoods renovation projects citywide.
