HOUSE OF TAN YEOK NEE

Built circa 1882-1885, House of Tan Yeok Nee is Singapore’s only remaining traditional Teochew mansion. The conservation approach is guided by the building’s various historical phases, informing the type and extent of intervention. Through a series of feasibility studies, wall treatments, repairs and reinstatement of historic elements, the building’s circulation and programmatic adjacencies are carefully reconfigured to rekindle its original design intent while respecting the building’s existing fabric. With the support of the present owner, and through extensive discussions with the Urban Redevelopment Authority and Preservation of Sites and Monuments Board, Singapore, the compound is now adapted for integrated use, housing offices, cafés, restaurant and a heritage gallery.
