JOCKEY CLUB I-VILLAGE, HKUST

The Jockey Club i-Village is a pioneering hostel development at HKUST, housing over 1,500 students. Guided by the university’s mission to harness technology for global issues, the design marries advanced digital design with sustainable construction and operational strategies for a 50-year life cycle.

Arranged in a meandering hexagonal configuration along the hillside, the residential halls create four terraced courtyards. This clever massing ensures every room overlooks green space, leaving the building with no rear elevation.

Responding to the site’s 25-metre level change, a top-down spatial hierarchy organizes functions. The roofline serves as an animated public thoroughfare for spontaneous communal interaction, while quieter, breakout courtyards sit at the base. Internally, flexible bedroom clusters replace conventional long corridors, balancing personal privacy with vibrant co-living. The overall masterplan stands as a brilliant showcase for social cohesion.
