BAIWANG QUALITY UPGRADING PROJECT, NANSHAN DISTRICT
Located in the Xilihu Water Source Reserve at the foothills of Yangtai Mountain in northern Nanshan District, Shenzhen, the site evolved from a traditional Hakka settlement. Decades of unregulated construction have given rise to over 700 self-built residential buildings, forming a typical Shenzhen urban village with long-standing spatial disorder and deep-rooted problems.
Guided by the “fine embroidery” philosophy of urban renewal, the project pursues quality improvement and cultural inheritance through precise intervention. It optimizes interior layouts and vertical circulation to meet the needs of young groups and unlock public space; micro-renovates idle sites to introduce multi-level social spaces including pocket parks; preserves and reinterprets local architectural symbols to carry forward the settlement’s cultural context; and links with the Xilihu Greenway to build a village-surrounding ecological park, injecting new vitality into the old village.
