THE EVOLUTION OF SHANGHAI GRAND THEATRE’S PUBLIC SPACES

As a profound regeneration of public space within the context of urban renewal, the revitalization of the Shanghai Grand Theatre was executed under the management’s strict mandate of “zero interruption to performances.” Between 2018 and 2025, Supercloud Studio adopted a phased, scenario-specific, and parallel-growth strategy to complete a systematic upgrade of over 10,000 square meters. This comprehensive renewal encompassed the underground transit hub, ticket center, small theatre, and backstage areas. This six-year organic evolution not only reshaped the holistic spatial experience but also forged a dual dimension bridging “professional performing arts” and “daily civic life.” While safeguarding the seamless operation of world-class artistic production, the design precisely answers the public’s profound desire for openness, social interaction, and lingering.
