JEWEL MANSION – RENOVATION OF 586 PANYU RD

Located at the intersection of Panyu Road and Huaihai Road in Shanghai, the building originally served as the office of the Japanese Consulate, featuring a red-brick Neoclassical style. It was later renovated with a glass and aluminum curtain wall, which conflicted with the surrounding historical character. This project is a second renovation. Based on the existing structure, the design proposes a concept of ‘Retrospective & Adaptive Renovation’: tracing the original classical features (red brick, round arches, multi-section composition) while integrating typical elements of the historic district (keystones, stacked arches, etc.), and adapting to the needs of high-end residential and office use, creating a spatial experience of ‘Shanghai under the plane trees’. Respecting the urban fabric, the design seeks a balance between modernity and historical character, granting the building a new lease on life.
