FAR EASTERN DEPARTMENT STORE – ZHUBEI

The Far Eastern Department Store introduces a distinctive and new retail experience in Zhubei, Hsinchu County in Taiwan and has been welcomed as a platform for cultural inheritance in the area. The department store is spread over eight above-ground levels and two basement levels with a design that has taken inspiration from the importance of celebrating local culture, innovatively reimagining spaces using the values and elements of the Hakka culture. Interpreting elements from the local culture through the use of colour, texture and lighting, and transposing them into different settings, presents different themes and experiences for visitors. Tulou architecture is a significant inspiration, with the designers introducing a Tulou roof structure to crown the top floors and atrium. A traditional ‘Hakka Old Street’ enlivens the upper levels, with its characteristic red brick facades, replica wooden doors and flower lanterns to evoke the old charm of an historic street experience.
