Changsha Baxizhou Island

Baxizhou is an 80 ha island located on Changsha Xiang River. The goal of this design is to create

an island park in order to provide various programs for Changsha citizens and to present the

beauty of river and island. This design is based on the vernacular ecological settings and

satisfying the flood control requirements. A series of linear revetment and terraces are

proposed along the 6-kilometer long edge of Baxizhou island, adapting the seasonal water

level changes. The topography of the island is developed to follow the direction of the river

flow, which facilitates the flood to run through or bypass the island, reducing impact on the

island itself. Different levels of wetlands are proposed on the two sides of the island, with

various plant species, forming a natural buffer of the island. As a public waterfront project,

Baxizhou Island successfully integrates natural system, native culture, and arts.
