INTERCONTINENTAL SAPPORO
Celebrating Hokkaido’s rich nature while honoring the Indigenous Ainu people, who valued harmony with the natural world, the design also reflects the region’s pioneering history and Western architectural heritage. Through carefully articulated materials, details, and art, these layers are reinterpreted to create a maison where guests can quietly immerse themselves in the story woven throughout the hotel. Public areas express the Ainu belief that spirits dwell in all aspects of nature. A reception lobby representing the deity of water, a lounge inspired by the deity of fire, and a café bar symbolizing the deity of the forest are seamlessly connected, forming a layered composition where details, materials, and colors transition in subtle gradations. Guest rooms offer a more private, residential atmosphere. Graphic carpets echo surrounding greenery, while distinctive furnishings are arranged in dialogue, creating a refined blend of contemporary expression and elegant atmosphere.
