Nanchang Red Earth Park
The Red Earth Park is located on the outskirts of the southern Chinese city of Nanchang, about 25 miles from the city’s downtown area. The site of the park is dominated by patches of reticulated red earth and Masson’s pine forest. The design team approached the project from a multitude of different perspectives, including ecology, education, aesthetics, and experience. In order to form a nature park that protects the unique soil type of this region, they decided to implement low-level intervention and ecological restoration strategies. Thus, the park design is a combination of an ecological restoration and a scenic landscape with natural experiences and environmental education opportunities. Since its completion, the park has raised the awareness of protecting the red earth among the local people, creating a wide-ranging and positive impact on-site.
